Our roots are in higher education.

Our History

Five years: 2013 - 2018

It began with a professor who lived near Kansas City and had spent almost every summer since WWII in New England with his wife. As a chemist, Bill wanted to have a positive influence on sustainability and climate change, and he chose higher education as the mechanism because of his experience as an educator during his eight decade career: 1940s to 2010s. His first gift of several thousand dollars laid the foundation for Making Tomorrow.

Because of Bill’s interest, the organization was incorporated in 2013 as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization. Classified as tax-exempt by the IRS, the foundational purpose is to raise and manage charitable gifts that support institutions of of higher education.

Three years: 2019 - 2021

The most recent three years have focused on strengthening. 2019 included outreach to dozens of entrepreneurs and a deep analysis of how ten leaders with university affiliations are influencing change. Completed in 2020, the analysis led to more formalized strategy for collaboration and direct funding to campuses, following the basic existing model: raise money to support action.

In the Spring 2021, board members made donation commitments to a mixture of public and private institutions of higher education in four Eastern States and two Western States.

Many campus programs are seeking support, so the Summer of 2021 was also the launch of targeted fundraising campaign. Gifts to Making Tomorrow included nearly $20,000 from Nelnet’s Nebraska-based foundation as well as support from individuals in New England and in California.

The current triennium: 2022 - 2024

The current triennium is about growth and sustainability, seeking to diversity revenues from beyond the early supporters and establishing additional research collaborations
